What to do With Your Old Consoles? (Blog 11)

It’s the dawn of a new day for video games. With the Xbox Series X and PS5 set to release on November 10th and 12, respectively, many fans are gearing up to wait in lines at their local retailers to pick up their desired console. For many users, this is a direct upgrade from their current consoles, the Xbox One and PS4. For others, it might be a decision in the making for a while, as they’ve been holding on to their Xbox 360 or PS3. How can players deal with letting go with their current console?

Never be afraid of change, especially for video game consoles. For those who don’t want to stop playing the games they’re playing now. Fortunately, both Microsoft and Sony have planned for this, especially Microsoft and their Xbox. The Xbox Series X will be backwards compatible with all Xbox One games, Xbox 360 games, and select Original Xbox games. Whether you have them on disc or saved to your Xbox account, they’ll be ready to install on launch day. The PS5 also has select backwards compatibility with PS4 games, through either remakes of older games on the new system, or a subscription service which gives some of the most popular PS4 games on launch day.

It might raise the question about what to do with your old consoles. No matter what system is launching, there will always be a market for older systems. Whether it’s through Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or online websites like eBay and Amazon, selling your older consoles for a smaller price can be done, usually to help pay for the newer consoles.

If you want to above and beyond, also consider donating your older consoles to hospitals and other facilities that could help younger children. For those who don’t have as much wealth as others, a used console is just as thoughtful as anything else. If you’re not going to use it, find someone who will!

The next gen consoles are looking to be feats of engineering that should last for the next decade before the next big thing emerges for video games. But keep in mind that there’s better things to do then to let your old consoles sit in the closet and pick up dust. Whether it’s selling them to get he money to pay for next gen, or donating them to those who are less fortunate, older consoles still have a purpose. Maybe it’s nostalgia for some, or ignorance for others. It doesn’t matter at the end of the day, consoles are an important part of someone’s life, but it doesn’t hurt to let go for the next big thing.
